There is going to come a time where you might have to deal with a stain, even if you are really good about keeping up with your carpet cleaning at home. There are accidents, spills, pet accidents, dirt tracked in from outside, and other issues that wreak havoc on a carpet over time. Where there are many tactical approaches to keeping your carpets in optimal condition, we at American Hometown Services would like to share a small handful of carpet cleaning hacks.
Blot Carpet Stains
When cleaning carpets, it is common that people attempt to rub the stain away and is one of the one biggest mistakes homeowner make. Due to the friction and stress of the rubbing motion, all this does is wear the stain down deeper into the carpet fibers and potentially damage it. A better, more effective method of cleaning up a stain, is blotting. With a bit of cleaning solution mixture, use a clean cloth and/or paper towel. Rather than rubbing it away, only place a small amount of pressure on the area and focus on soaking up the stain. To help prevent the stain from spreading, always blot from the outside.
Clean Carpet Stains with Hydrogen Peroxide
A lot tougher on the stain, is cleaning that stain using some hydrogen peroxide in the event you have a stain that is a result of blood. To loosen up the blood in the affected area you should first try the use of a mixture of mild soap and water. Before you apply the hydrogen peroxide to the stain, you can then scrape it away from the carpet as much as possible after you have loosened the blood. When it hits the blood, expect the solution to foam. Blot and dry the area after about 30 seconds.
Soda on Beer or Wine Carpet Stains
An effective method for eliminating stains from beer or wine, among other circumstances, is white soda. Begin blotting at the affected area with a towel or cloth soaked with white soda. You can mix the soda with water and white vinegar if you need something a little more heavy-duty. Before soaking it up with a sponge, apply the mixture directly to the area and let it soak in for about 15 minutes. The stains on the carpet can be eliminated by repeating the steps.
Chewing Gum Stain Removal
The best method of removing it is to essentially freeze-dry it if you have chewing gum that’s been pressed into the carpet fibers. Then use a spoon to lift up the piece of gum and cut the strands as close as possible, take a few ice cubes and let it sit on top of the gum for a few minutes. If there is any gum left behind for you to continue working on, you can keep refreezing as needed.
